Kenya’s Gen Z has been in the spotlight recently for distancing themselves from political figures and anyone claiming to represent them. They have organized online campaigns to mobilize their peers for the upcoming “Nanenane” protests on August 8th. Though the specific motivations behind these demonstrations are not entirely clear, a faction of Gen Z has reached out to matatu (public minibus) owners and operators in Nairobi with a special request.

In a public letter, Gen Z has called on matatu owners to provide free rides or reduce fares for those traveling to Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on the day of the protest. The letter appeals to the matatu operators for their support, pointing out the economic struggles they face and urging them to assist Kenyans in attending the demonstration.

It is uncertain whether matatu operators will respond positively to this request, especially given reports that some have increased fares during recent protests. The operators’ decisions could significantly affect the participation and outcome of the planned “Nanenane” protest.
