Gen Z demonstrations began with the slogan rejecting the Finance Bill 2024. It changed to “Ruto must go,” and now they have introduced another slogan rejecting cabinet secretaries. According to TV47 News aired yesterday at 9 pm, it was said that only one demand of Gen Z has been fulfilled, which is the rejection of the Finance Bill.
Gen Z seems to be losing the momentum they had as President Ruto continues to ignore some of their demands by replacing cabinet secretaries with older individuals. Some Kenya Kwanza leaders, like Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have said that some opposition leaders use the Gen Z demonstrations to join the government. Now that they have joined the government, the Gen Z protests have decreased.
Gen Z seems to be changing their demands from “Ruto must go” to rejecting cabinet secretaries. They have warned members of parliament not to propose the names of new cabinet secretaries; otherwise, they will occupy parliament again as they did before. They told members of parliament that if the names of the cabinet secretaries are forwarded to them in the same way the Finance Bill was, they must reject all the names.
They have given the office of the president some demands, such as sharing with Kenyans the investigation that is ongoing in Kware, where 60 girls were killed. They have said that the president has been ignoring them. They stated that the new cabinet nominees were not part of Gen Z’s demands to the president, and therefore, they are not happy with the president’s new cabinet. They believe that the new members are not fit enough to be given the position of cabinet secretary, and therefore, it’s time for young people to take over.
