The attention of Kenyans right now is on the succession matrix at the National Police Service following the recent resignation of Japheth Koome as the Inspector General of Police.
After days of intense pressure on the former police chief, he decided to call it quits, creating a vacancy in the highest police office on the land.
Koome served for just over one year having been appointed in 2022 to succeed Hillary Mutyambai who equally resigned.
Though former Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Kenya Police Service wing Douglas Kanja Kirocho l, was appointed to fill the void as an acting IG, it is very unlikely that he will be picked as the next police boss.
The age factor is disadvantaging Kanja, the former long serving GSU commandant. At 60 years, Kanja is almost few weeks or months away from exiting the service after attaining retirement age.
This technically knocks him from the Koome succession battle. As such, his juniors like the current acting Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Kenya Police Service wing, Eliud Lagat and his Administration Police Service counterpart John Kama, are better placed to take over from Koome.
