The recent announcement by the Salaries and Renumeration Commission that government officials will have an increase in their salaries has sparked mixed reactions from Kenyans. Many Kenyans have been left wondering why government officials will have an increase in their salaries when their are civil servants earning peanuts while breaking their backs serving the nation.
Others wondered why the money could not be used to higher new civil servants to end the labour shortage in different ministries. Lawyer Miguna Miguna is among the people that have criticized this move to have the salaries of government officials increased. He has said that most of the officials are corrupt and have been stealing public funds from the government since they took office.
He went ahead to allege that president Ruto’s cabinet secretaries and Principal secretaries have bought home worth Sh200 million using the money. He noted that they houses are in countries like Dubai, South Africa, London and USA. Some of the officials used to travel on Tuktuks and motorcycles but are now driving expensive cars. Miguna said that all these are proceeds of corruption.
“Since their appointments, each one of Rutos cabinet and PSs have bought homes worth Sh200M each with others bought in Dubai, South Africa, London and USA. Ruto’s CSs and PSs who were driving TukTuk the other day are nowadays driving brand new Mercedes Maybachs, Rolls Royce and Range Rovers worth tens of millions of shillings each – all stolen from the public.”
