For the first time in the history of inter-generational banters, the most populous generation currently which is identified as Generation Z or rather Gen Z has received praise and accolades from their rival generation namely the millennials. This comes after a long day of running battles between Kenyans who are opposing the proposed 2024 Financial Bill and the police around the streets of Nairobi Central Business District(CBD).
The engagement between the police and the protesting Kenyans began early in the morning on Tuesday 18th June 2024 after police officers were deployed to prevent them from accessing the parliament buildings where the 2024 Finance Bill was being discussed by the legislators.
The onlookers who witnessed the not-so-peaceful protests did not hesitate to note that the protestors were majorly members of the infamous Gen Z generation. Gen Z comprises of the people born between 1997 and 2012. The generation has been largely associated with ignorance and don’t care attitude in relation to the already existing norms of the society.
However, today the generation has earned unprecedented praise and accolades following their non-retreat and unsurrendering confrontation against the police during the protests. Here are some of the comments from older Kenyans praising the Gen Z;
“It’s not the fearful middle class that will push this government, it is the Gen Z who have no recollection of Moi and his torturous regime.”, wrote a social media user named Selective Nomad on X.
“They thought the older generation will be the ones leading the opposition of Finance Bill 2024, so they came up with Rigathi Gachagua distraction. Little did they know that Gen Z and other youths will lead the protests.”, Added a social media user named Kiprono on X.
Another one named House of Ndegwa quipped, “When we were kids,if a visitor offered you something, a simple wink from you mama/paps was enough to chicken out – not with Gen Z hawa hua wanauliza maswali – mami uko na shida ya macho? Politicians BeWare!! This is not the 90’s.”
On Facebook, a user of the social platform named Kinoti Mwirigi M’abuange came out to apologize to the Gen Z on behalf of the Millennials generation as he wrote, “We officially tender our apology to Gen Z for calling them names. we didn’t know how far you can go, your capabilities. We stop tagging you names, you’ve earned your place on the table. You’ve stood to be counted.
