The judiciary has announced a raft of measures to secure its officers and directed that going forward services will no longer be rendered in make-shift structures.

In a statement on Monday, Chief Justice Martha Koome said the decision was made to guarantee judicial officers their safety and security.

“Going forward, judicial services will no longer be rendered in makeshift structures,” Koome said.

She said the judiciary is currently engaging “robustly” with other relevant state agencies and stakeholders on long-term measures to ensure the safety and security of our court premises for Judges, Judicial Officers, Judiciary Staff, and Courts.

The CJ regretted that in the past, the Judiciary has repeatedly requested the Executive and Parliament for sufficient resource allocation to upgrade court facilities to standards that would guarantee efficient and safe execution of judicial duties without much success.

“This goal is yet to be fully realised. In appreciation of these gaps, we will not expose Judiciary personnel to insecurity risks and will ensure that security, especially where infrastructure is inadequate, is not compromised,” she said.

At the same time, Koome announced that as directed by the Judiciary’s Leadership Team, Tuesday, June 18, 2024, is designated as the day of remembrance, and prayers for Hon Monica Kivuti.

Kivuti was shot dead by a senior police officer during a live court session at Makadara Law Courts last week.

“Each court station will customise their programme accordingly,” the CJ said

The CJ described Kivuti as a gallant officer who died protecting the rule of law, holding court in a tent and over lunch hour.

“The best way we can honour her commitment is by continuing to provide services in adherence to the constitution and the rule of law,” she said.

”Any lapse that might lead to lawlessness and anarchy would be contrary to what Hon. Kivuti stood for. We are committed to honouring her dedication to justice by following her example.”
