Winyo’s music is a modern take on the traditional benga style, known for its distinctive guitar sounds and pioneered by Luo legends like Ochieng’ Nelly and George Ramogi. His songs, which vary in language between Dholuo, Swahili, and English, often address social issues such as homelessness and the intricacies of love and marriage.
Starting his career in the trio ‘Rateng,’ Winyo gained recognition for his skills in songwriting and guitar. His early work with the group, especially their album “Thumology,” highlighted his talent as a versatile musician. His artistry has been recognized globally, making him a finalist in the Radio France International (RFI) Discoveries awards in 2010 and 2011 and earning him a nomination in the Rolex Arts Initiative Mentor and Protégé programme in 2012.
Winyo’s contributions extend beyond performing. He is also a respected composer, songwriter, photographer, actor, and television producer. His role in developing African music curricula at the Global Music Academy’s workshop in South Africa is a testament to his dedication to his craft.
Solo, Winyo has released albums like “Benga Blues” and collaborated with international artists such as Joss Stone and Vieux Farka Touré. His performances have graced many prestigious stages, including the Library of Congress in the USA and the Musique Metisses festival in France. His music has reached audiences far and wide, from the Africa Festival in Wurzburg, Germany, to the Festival for African Fashion and Arts in Kenya.
