As the 2024 Paris Olympics approach, the event promises not only high-octane sports action but also a showcase of global cultural talent. Among the performers, Kenya’s own Shiphton Onyango, known by his stage name Winyo, is set to perform, bringing the rich musical traditions of the Luo tribe to an international audience.

The name “Winyo,” which means “bird” in Luo, reflects the singer’s light, melodious vocal style that has charmed fans around the world. Winyo recently shared his excitement on Instagram about performing at the Olympics, expressing his honor in representing Kenya and teasing his followers about the upcoming year’s plans.

Winyo’s music is a modern take on the traditional benga style, known for its distinctive guitar sounds and pioneered by Luo legends like Ochieng’ Nelly and George Ramogi. His songs, which vary in language between Dholuo, Swahili, and English, often address social issues such as homelessness and the intricacies of love and marriage.

Starting his career in the trio ‘Rateng,’ Winyo gained recognition for his skills in songwriting and guitar. His early work with the group, especially their album “Thumology,” highlighted his talent as a versatile musician. His artistry has been recognized globally, making him a finalist in the Radio France International (RFI) Discoveries awards in 2010 and 2011 and earning him a nomination in the Rolex Arts Initiative Mentor and Protégé programme in 2012.

Winyo’s contributions extend beyond performing. He is also a respected composer, songwriter, photographer, actor, and television producer. His role in developing African music curricula at the Global Music Academy’s workshop in South Africa is a testament to his dedication to his craft.

Solo, Winyo has released albums like “Benga Blues” and collaborated with international artists such as Joss Stone and Vieux Farka Touré. His performances have graced many prestigious stages, including the Library of Congress in the USA and the Musique Metisses festival in France. His music has reached audiences far and wide, from the Africa Festival in Wurzburg, Germany, to the Festival for African Fashion and Arts in Kenya.

As he prepares to perform at the Paris Olympics, Winyo is set to bring the spirit of Kenya’s vibrant culture to the global stage, joining other renowned athletes in showcasing the best of Kenya’s talent and heritage to the world.
