In a bid to support his orphaned siblings and provide for his own family, a 35-year-old Homabay man made a life-altering decision: selling his kidney.
However, a year later, he finds himself filled with regret and grappling with deteriorating health.
The man, whose identity remains anonymous for fear of repercussions from the organ-harvesting syndicate, shared his story with TUKO.co.ke.
He recounted how financial strain pushed him to seek out a middleman who promised him KSh 500,000 in exchange for his kidney.
With dreams of educating his siblings and improving his family’s living conditions, he saw this as a solution to their struggles.
After being linked to the organ broker by a friend who had also sold his kidney, the man underwent surgery at a private hospital in Eldoret to remove his kidney.
Despite initially feeling relieved to have the money to pay for his siblings’ education and purchase a motorbike, he soon began experiencing the harsh reality of his decision.
Post-surgery, the man’s health began to decline rapidly. He found himself struggling to perform even the simplest of tasks and faced constant reminders of the irreversible impact of his choice.
Additionally, he endured humiliation and threats from the middleman who warned him against speaking out about the illegal transaction.
Reflecting on his experience, the man issued a heartfelt plea to others, urging them not to follow in his footsteps.
