A bus belonging to Mtito Shuttle has been involved in an accident at Mavivye area in Makueni County.

The bus driver was trying to evade a roadblock mounted by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) near Salama market along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, when the tragedy occurred. On reaching the area, the driver is said to turned from the main highway and took an alternative route.

Barely two kilometers into a rough road, the bus hit a bump, rolled over and plunged into river.

Following the incident, several passengers were evacuated to safety from the wreckage with minor Injuries. The injured were taken Sultan Hamud Sub-county Hospital for treatment.

The NTSA officers mounted the roadblock in the area, catching the motorists by surprise and forcing some of them to speed off.

Mukaa Sub-county Police Commander Barnabas Ngeno confirmed the incident saying that it is suspected that the bus was overloaded during the accident. Ngeno urged passengers to corporate by complying with traffic rules.

NTSA embarked on a comprehensive operation aimed at raising awareness on road safety to address the rising number of accidents. On the other hand, the police have heightened the crackdown on errant motorists until order is restored on our roads.
