Some hours ago Thumbi TV aired a video delving into the life and enigmatic demise of the renowned Kikuyu benga musician Sam Kinuthia, who passed away in 2003. The program sought to shed light on numerous questions surrounding the artist’s life and untimely death.

Born in 1969 in Kahuho, Kiambogo, Nakuru County, Sam Kinuthia was a child in a family of 11 children. As a youth, he was an active member of the Full Gospel Church of Kenya, serving as the youth leader. His musical talent was evident from childhood, and in 1985, he recorded his debut song featuring Timoh na Mburu while concurrently selling second-hand clothing. In 1992 his career in music was at the peak and everyone was following his debut songs.

Within the music realm, Sam Kinuthia quickly rose to fame, becoming one of the most acclaimed musicians of his era. His songs resonated deeply with Kikuyu audiences, and his rivalry with John Demathew further propelled his popularity. His name became synonymous with benga music, and his melodies were ubiquitous throughout Kikuyu communities.

Sam Kinuthia’s initial illness manifested on stage when he experienced vomiting. While he recovered, his wife revealed that he had been suffering from persistent ulcers. Pastor JJ Gitahi suggested that Kinuthia was the target of rival artists who sought to eliminate him. According to the pastor, Kinuthia was targeted with witchcraft and alcoholism which ultimately led to his demise.

Timo na Mburu, a close friend of Kinuthia’s, attested to his struggles with alcoholism, stating that it interfered with his ability to eat properly. Despite his addiction, Kinuthia persevered with his music until it consumed his life. In 2000, Sammy Muraya intervened and assisted Kinuthia in relocating from Kiandutu to Kayole. However, his stomach issues persisted, and he relied on alcohol to alleviate the pain.

As Kinuthia’s health deteriorated, he confided in his brother that he was urinating blood. He also revealed that another musician had prophesied that he would never sing again, but he dismissed it as a mere superstition.

Kinuthia’s condition worsened and he was admitted to the hospital. On his deathbed, he recalled the musician’s prophecy, implicating him in his demise. Kinuthia passed away on June 26, 2003, at the age of 34, leaving behind a wife and four children.

He was laid to rest in the Nakuru Public Cemetery, fulfilling his final wish. The circumstances surrounding his death continue to be debated, with many believing that he was the victim of spiritual interference.
