Jimmy Cherizier, a formidable Haitian gang leader who has ruled terror for the previous two weeks, issued a warning to other nations not to meddle in the chaotic internal affairs of their own nation. Speaking to W Radio, a Spanish-language network, Cherizier—also referred to as Barbecue—explained that Haiti’s citizens, not outsiders, will bring about peace in the country.
The gang leader also questioned the purpose of the international assistance, pointing out that every nation tries to protect its interests in these situations. “Haitians are the ones who have to solve the country’s problems; outside help is not needed. Every nation protects its own interests. Our living circumstances need to be changed,” he said.
Kenya is scheduled to deploy 1,000 security officers to the Caribbean country as part of the peacekeeping mission to Haiti. That deployment has, however, been temporarily halted due to the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. The United States recently granted Haitian gangs a 24-hour deadline to submit a representative to the transitional council that will choose the country’s acting prime minister.
Ariel Henry’s decision to step down as prime minister was also rejected by Cherizier, who pointed out that the struggle for liberty is still ongoing. The resignation of Ariel Henry is unimportant to us. “We are going to keep fighting for the liberation of Haiti,” the gang leader declared.
