On Wednesday morning, CNN journalist Larry Madowo posted a thought provoking questions to Kenyans and Tanzanians. In the post on X, Larry posted a Kenyan note and a Tanzanian note. The Kenyan one had translated the word bank as ‘banki’ while the Tanzanian note had the term ‘benki.’ He asked of the two, which one was grammatically correct in Swahili language.
Tanzanians quickly came out in their numbers dismissing Kenyans for using a non existent Swahili word and that the correct translation for the word bank was ‘benki.’
Defeated and unable to secure a comeback, Kenyans resorted to slander Tanzanians for having a weaker currency. They said that even though Tanzanians notes might be grammatically correct, it is the value of the notes that matter.
Some said that nobody will ever choose a grammatically correct note over a stronger note.
During a similar debate in 2019, the Kenyan Central Bank was forced to come out and say that indeed the term ‘benki’ was the grammatically correct one but they intentionally went for the other term since it is historically and linguistically correct.
