Contributions to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) have taken a a major twist after Head of State His Excellency Dr William Samoei Ruto announced pivotal changes on Ksh500 monthly remittances to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
Addressing during the upgrading to bitumen standard of the Uplands-Kijabe-Maai Mahiu Roads event held in Lari, Kiambu County today the 14th day of February 2024, Head of State His Excellency Dr William Samoei Ruto has underscored that all Kenyan citizens currently contributing KSh500 to NHIF will no longer be contributing that amount going forward after the star reduced the contribution.
The Head of State intimated that all Kenyan citizens currently paying Ksh500 to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) will be contributing Ksh300 to the fund going forward.
The president underscored that the decision to reduce the NHIF monthly contribution for this cohort of Kenyan citizens has been arrived at in a strategic move fostered enabling them to access quality health care at health facilities.
“In order to ensure that those with low incomes contribute to NHIF and have access to medical coverage that will pay for their medical treatment and other hospital bills, we have announced that Kenyans who have been contributing Ksh500 to the fund will now only be contributing Ksh300. We further claim that a certain percentage of Kenyans cannot pay that KSh300. We have made the decision to cover the cost of their medical coverage as the government for those who cannot afford the Ksh 300 per month. In order to pay for their medical coverage, we will conduct an assessment to determine which Kenyan citizens cannot afford Ksh300 per month,” President Ruto stated.
