The Tumaini area of Matisi Ward in Trans-Nzoia County is grappling with disbelief and sorrow after the grim discovery of the lifeless body of Linda Machuma, a prison warder at Kitale Main Prison. Machuma, 28, had last communicated with her neighbours three days prior, expressing her anticipation for inter-prison games.
According to Kevin Kulumba, one of her neighbours, Machuma’s absence initially went unnoticed, as she had mentioned her plans to attend the sporting event in Nakuru. However, concern arose when her cousin, Dr. Kiplimo, visited and found her door locked from the inside. Upon closer examination, they noticed feet through the door’s peephole but were unable to ascertain the identity.
With the assistance of local law enforcement, they gained access to Machuma’s residence and made the grim discovery of her decomposing body. Shockingly, it appeared that she had been deceased for approximately four days. A chilling detail emerged as a phone charging cable was found wrapped around her neck, indicating a possible method of suicide.
The tragic incident adds to the troubling trend of police officers taking their own lives, echoing similar cases across Kenya. As investigations unfold, the community mourns the loss of Machuma and reflects on the importance of mental health awareness and support systems within law enforcement agencies.
The circumstances surrounding Machuma’s death serve as a sombre reminder of the hidden struggles individuals may face, underscoring the need for proactive measures to address mental health concerns within the police force.
