Fishing is a vital economic activity in Kenya. It is mainly carried out on rivers and lakes. The fish caught are sold directly to consumers or are transported to fish processing plants. Fishing generates income to fishermen and fishmongers. In addition, it is an important source of food. Fish is very nutritious and rich source of proteins. Most of the fishmongers buy fish for resale from Lake Victoria. It has been noticed that fish from Lake Victoria costs very high prices which makes it very difficult for those involved in fish business to realize large profits. This article reviews the lake where fish is bought at relatively cheaper prices, Lake Turkana.
Lake Turkana.
Lake Turkana is located in Marsabit County. It is the world’s largest desert lake measuring approximately 250km long and 44km wide. Like many desert lakes, Lake Turkana is a salty, closed basin. It is a home to more than sixty species of fish. The most famous and undoubtedly biggest catch on Lake Turkana is the Nile Perch, which can grow up to 2m and weigh as much as 200kg.
At Lake Turkana region, fish is bought at cheaper prices because of low human population and harsh weather conditions. Low human population means less number of consumers of fish. High temperatures cause fresh fish to go bad easily and therefore, the fishermen sells the fish at low prices to help prevent incurring losses.
