Ker Odungi Randa, the recently installed chairman of the Luo Council of Elders, is mourning the loss of his 42-year-old son, Stephen Milton Obote Randa, who allegedly took his own life at their Boya home in Nyando, Kisumu County.
The incident occured when Stephen was rushed to Ahero Sub County Hospital by family and neighbors, where he was later confirmed dead. Victor Okoth Odungi, the younger brother, shared the somber news to the source of this information, revealing that the body has been moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
“I accompanied my father to another function, and we are currently rushing to the mortuary to view the body,” Victor was quoted by the source of this information.
Victor explained that his late brother had been struggling with mental illness, which he attributed to malaria. Stephen had been residing with his father at their rural home. The heartbreaking loss occurred at approximately 1 pm on Monday.
“This is no way to celebrate Christmas. It is so devastating! My old man is so distraught and sad that he can’t talk to anyone,” he said.
Adding to the sorrow is the timing of the incident. Merely three days prior, Ker Odungi Randa had been inaugurated as the ninth Ker of the Luo community. The solemn ceremony took place at Ofafa Memorial Hall and was graced by the presence of Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga.
The sudden demise of Mr. Randa’s second-born child casts a shadow over what should have been a celebratory time for the family and the Luo community at large.
