Police in Mandera are investigating the mysterious death of a police officer.

The lifeless body of the officer was on Wednesday morning found lying in a pool of blood at a pit latrine block in what is suspected to be a case of suicide.

Police who discovered the officer’s body said he was in civilian clothes with an AK-47 rifle beside him. A spent cartridge was also recovered at the scene.

The scene of crime was processed and the body moved to the nearby morgue awaiting postmortem.

Confirming the incident, area police boss said the deceased was attached to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) security team.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sleuths have since launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of his untimely demise.

Concerns have been raised about the increase in deaths and murders involving armed police officers in Kenya. Psychological issues have been identified as a significant contributor to increased suicide cases among the security forces.
