With President William Ruto having purged the remnants of all his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta from government, Dr Edwin Abonyo is among the lucky few who have survived the onslaught.
The Head of State has been on a charm offensive by kicking out some of Uhuru’s top appointees since he took over power in September 2022.
New board chairpersons of many state corporations have been appointed with other state agencies also getting new bosses even as Dr Ruto stamps his authority.
But for Dr Edwin Abonyo, the widower of former Bomet Governor Dr Joyce Laboso, it has been a smooth ride for him having survived the Ruto purge.
Dr Abonyo who hails from Kisumu County, has retained his position as the board chairperson for the National Museums of Kenya. He was appointed to thr position by the former President.
The late Governor was a close friend of Dr Ruto since their days in the National Assembly and as members of the ODM party.
Ruto was among those who played a big role in her election as Sotik MP in a 2008 by-election to inherit the seat left by her sisters Lorna Laboso who died in a helicopter crash.
In 2013, she was re-elected for a second term as MP and made history when she became the first woman to be elected as Deputy Speaker in Kenya.
Dr Laboso floored Isaac Ruto to win the Bomet County Governor seat seat during the 2017 general election. She served in the position for two years before her death in 2019.
