President William Ruto’s government has been forced to issue a clarification statement regarding the recent update by the CS for the Ministry of Interior Professor Kithure Kindiki.

In a gazette notice, Kindiki informed of major changes regarding the new cost of government services. A service that got many Kenyans by surprise is where Kindiki said any child born out of Kenya will need Ksh 1 million to be registered as a Kenyan Citizen.

There’s also Ksh 200,000 to be paid to process the necessary registration documents. This amounted to Ksh 1.2 million for the whole process of registered a child born out of the country.

Previously, the service costed only Ksh500 000.

In a statement shortly after the news that have since caused massive outrage from Kenyans, the Principal Secretary in charge of the State Department of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Hon Roseline Njogu has said there’s no such requirement as long as the parents of the child born out of Kenya are all Kenyans.

“I have received reports and questions surrounding the status of children of Kenyan parents born abroad. As per the Constitution, a child whose mother or father is a Kenyan Citizen, is a citizen by birth,” PS Njogu said

“They do not need to apply for permanent residency. They can acquire the usual citizenship documents (ID, passport, etc) by applying through the nearest Kenya Embassy,” she informed further.
