President William Ruto has warned leaders and officials in powerful positions against evading to pay taxes.
He narrated a scenario where a Kenyan informed him of a company which does not pay tax.
Speaking on Friday during the Kenya Revenue Authority 2023 Tax Payers Day, Ruto said that all Kenyans should pay taxes.
“I got a very interesting message yesterday from a patriotic Kenyan and I sent it to the Commissioner General of KRA, about a Kenyan who is saying there is this company that does not pay tax and they threaten people because it belongs to some senior guys. So I sent the contacts to the KRA CG,” he said.
“Nobody should threaten KRA using their positions, connections and power for them to avoid paying tax.”
The President said KRA is only doing its mandate to ensure that all Kenyans pay taxes.
He added that everyone must pay taxes despite their ranks and positions in government.
Ruto said that after paying taxes Kenyans should demand services from the government.
“I recognise the cardinal obligation of government to utilize all revenues prudently and efficiently in the service of our citizens. This commitment stands and we are committed to doing so with maximum transparency and accountability,” he said.
Ruto said the event is meant to celebrate Kenyans who have defied all odds to ensure that they meet their statutory obligations
