Narok senator hon Ledama ole Kina seems to have taken an earlier stand on governor kawira mwangaza impeachment even before the motion is tabled before the national Senate.
He says that the most difficult thing for him is to confirm on the impeachment of the governor.
This is because even if the governor will be sent home, the deputy governor will take over as the head of county yet they are both tied at the hip.
He says that to be fair enough both need to go home and voters in the county be given an opportunity to back to the ballot and elect the leader of their choice.
“The most difficult thing for me to do is to confirm the impeachment of a Governor! Ironically if a Governor is impeached, a deputy takes over yet article 179 of the constitution of Kenya ties them at the hip! To be fair all of them should be sent home and voters are asked to elect a new government”
Governor Kawira Mwangaza was impeached by the Meru Members of County Assembly (MCAs) on October 25, 2023, for seven counts of misconduct.
The charges include gross misconduct, misappropriation of county funds, nepotism, contempt of court, and usurpation of the law and the Constitution. The MCAs also accused her of bullying and naming a public road after her husband without following due process.
This is the second time Governor Mwangaza has been impeached by the Meru Assembly. The first attempt last year failed at the Senate Assembly.
In December 2022, Governor Mwangaza was saved by a senate committee led by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, which dismissed the impeachment allegations by Meru MCAs. Later, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua intervened and reconciled the MCAs with Governor Mwangaza.
However, this time around, the MCAs proceeded with the proceedings after the Court of Appeal declined to stop the assembly from proceeding with the impeachment motion.
On Monday, October 23, 2023, the MCAs completed mandatory public participation hearings in nine sub-counties and retreated to write a final report that was tabled before the assembly.
