One of the major issue affecting Devolution since the first election under the 2010 Constitution has been the fights between the governors and their deputies.
Months after elections, the counties have been experiencing battles with some governors sidelining their deputies as some deputies antagonize their bosses in bid to take over.
Currently, Meru county Governor Kawira Mwangaza and her Deputy are at war and already there is an impeachment motion against the governor. Siaya county governor James Orengo and his deputy William Oduol are not in good terms, the same has been happening in Kericho county.
However, some counties have remained peaceful as there is a very good working relationship between the governors and their Deputies.
Kisumu county is an example. In 2017, the then Kisumu county Senator Professor Peter Anyang Nyong’o picked Mathews Owili as his runningmate, the duo would win to form their Government.

Since then there has never been any Conflict or public fights between the two Leaders who succefully defended their seats in 2022 Elections.
Speaking to a local media house, the Deputy Governor explained why they have been working peacefully.
According to him, Professor Nyong’o fully understands the Constitution since he is among those who drafted it. He noted that the Governor has assigned him his roles and as his assistant, he does exactly what the governor has assigned him.
The deputy governor Further explained that he knows very well that there is only one governor at a time and this has always guided him not to go against his boss.
He noted that most of Deputy governors do not understand the fact that they are not equal to their bosses
“The deputy governor must accept that there can only be one governor at a time. Governor Nyong’o understands his place and has given me my space to carry out my mandate,” he said during the morning Interviews.
