Residents of an apartment in Kitui County are counting losses after a portion of perimeter wall collapsed leading to massive destruction of property.
The wall collapsed and destroyed vehicles that were parked outside the apartment.
According to tenants who live in the apartment, the incident occurred on Monday night following heavy rains. At around 4am following a long night of rains, residents heard a loud sound like thunder and immediately, when they went outside, they realised that part of the perimeter wall had collapsed.
Several vehicles were destroyed but luckily no casualties have been reported. Residents are now counting losses, with fears of more damage in the remaining section.
The Kitui County government is yet to comment on the incident. Heavy rains and poor construction are the major contributors to this accident. Most causes result from water seepage, fake material especially bricks that absorb water, poor compound drainage causing flooding near walls and they become weak.
