The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education recently concluded an investigation into alleged malpractices during the 2022 KCSE examination. Led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, the committee presented its findings to Parliament.
Fortunately, the Ministry of Education confirmed that the reported cases of malpractice were appropriately addressed and did not lead to result cancellations.
According to the committee’s report, one concerning aspect of the malpractices involved the use of technology to aid cheating. Some candidates attempted to bring mobile phones into the examination centers during the tests. These devices, considered a potential tool for cheating, were confiscated and subsequently handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for further scrutiny.
Moreover, students were found in possession of unauthorized materials while heading to the examination rooms. These findings highlight the evolving challenges in maintaining the integrity of Kenya’s national examinations, and ongoing efforts are essential to prevent such practices in the future.
