Yesterday’s national dialog at the Bomas of Kenya reportedly turned violent as clashes erupted between the Azimio and Kenya Kwanza factions. The opposition, standing firm on their claim of victory in last year’s presidential election, demanded an audit of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) servers. This demand faced staunch opposition from the Kenya Kwanza camp, resulting in a deadlock.
Hopes were high that the bipartisan discussions at Bomas would help resolve the ongoing dispute between the government and the opposition. However, progress seems to be elusive as no signs of agreement have emerged from the negotiation rooms. The impasse appears to be fueled by hardline stances taken by influential figures within both camps.
Taking charge of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance bipartisan team is Kimani Ichung’wah, the majority leader of the National Assembly. On the other side, leading the Azimio faction is Kalonzo Musyoka, the head of the Wiper party. These leaders are known as staunch allies of President William Ruto and Raila Odinga, respectively.
