Multimedia University was one of the top trending topics on social media platform X on Tuesday morning after students held a protest.
The Star spoke to Emmanuel Shivachi a student mobiliser under the Multimedia University of Kenya Students Association (MUKSA) who said students were demonstrating over missing marks for those set to graduate this year.
“Students who are supposed to graduate on 27 of this month have missing marks which will hinder their graduation,” he said.
Shivachi said the students are also demonstrating over the poor state of the hostels, saying most of them are old and dirty with sanitation wanting.
“The workers that clean our hostels had also gone on a go-slow last week and there was no water for cleaning,” Shivachi said.
Shivachi said the students started their demonstrations at 4 am on Tuesday morning.
“Almost all students slept in school in preparation for the demonstrations,” he said.
Shivachi said the demonstration had been planned by the students’ body MUKSA.
“Our student leaders had tried addressing the issue with our Vice Chancellor but he keeps giving us empty promises,” he said.
Shivachi said they want the school administration to address the issue of missing marks for those set to graduate and restore proper sanitation in the school.
The students also want the school to have more classrooms, desks and hostels.
“We feel the institution has admitted more learners than the resources available,” Shivachi said.
The demonstration led to a traffic snarl along Magadi Road, police were also at the scene to quell the chaos.
The Star reached out to the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Mbatia who said he had no information regarding the ongoing demonstrations.
The Communications Faculty Dean Dr Collins Wagumba also said he was not aware of why the students were holding the demos.
