The al-shabaab terrorists have released a disheartening video showing how they killed the innocent civilians in a construction site last week.

They have claimed to be responsible for the attack of this attack that left the country in despair.

A group of suspected al-Shabaab militants attacked a construction site in Bodhei Majengo area, Lamu County, on Friday, killing at least five people and injuring several others. The attackers also destroyed a bridge that was under construction in the area.

According to police, the victims included workers constructing the highway leading from the Lamu Port to Ethiopia and South Sudan. The attackers also torched two construction vehicles and motorbikes belonging to the workers at the camp.

The attackers had briefly detained two Chinese foremen but they released them later. They had escaped into the Boni Forest, where security agents were pursuing them.

This is not the first time that al-Shabaab has targeted a construction site in Lamu County. In January this year, they attacked another site and burnt eight trucks. They also claimed responsibility for an attack on a construction site along the highway near Majengo on March 11, 2022, killing four people and injuring a Chinese national.

Al-Shabaab is a terrorist group from Somalia that has been waging war against Kenya and its allies since 2011. They have carried out several attacks on civilians, security forces and infrastructure projects in Kenya, especially in Lamu County.

The LAPSSET Corridor Programme is Eastern Africa’s largest and most ambitious infrastructure project bringing together Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan. A Chinese company is constructing the road that will lead to Garissa, Isiolo and later to Ethiopia and South Sudan.

The road construction comprises of 257-km Lamu-Ijara-Garissa section which is part of the LAPSSET project as well as the Hindi-Bodhei-Basuba-Kiunga section which spans 113 km and the Ijara-Sangailu-Hulugho section which extends 83 km.

The government has deployed more security personnel to protect the workers and contractors in the site.
