The Nairobi High Court has barred the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) from releasing money raised through the White Tape Levy. The White Tape Levy is a new tax introduced by the Kenyan government on Monday 11 September. The tax is imposed on the sale of blank media and devices such as CDs, DVDs, USB drives and smartphones.
The amount of the fee depends on the type of media or device. The order was issued on Wednesday, September 13 following a petition filed by individuals who claimed to be acting on behalf of music producers and performers. The viral challenge, dead capital, has taken social media platforms by storm and Kenyans have let others peek into their luxurious lifestyles.
Despite the tough economic times, some Kenyans have taken to social media to flaunt their lavish lifestyles, much to the amazement of Kenyans watching from the sidelines. Highlights range from multi-storey modern houses, ostrich farms and helicopter tours to unique swimming pools.
