A photo of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and President William Ruto having a conversation at a public event has sparked mixed reactions from Kenyans online. The photo, which was posted by the Facebook page Kenyans.co.ke, asked the users to caption what they think Sonko was telling Ruto.
Some of the comments were humorous, while others were critical of the two leaders. Here are some of the responses:
“Sonko: Boss, I have a plan to make you win the next election. Ruto: Tell me. Sonko: We will distribute free fire extinguishers to every household in Nairobi.” – John Mwangi
- “Sonko: Your Excellency, I am sorry for what I did to you. Please forgive me and give me another chance. Ruto: Sonko, you betrayed me and joined the handshake team. You are no longer my friend.” – Mary Wanjiku
- “Sonko: Baba, I have a secret to tell you. Ruto: What is it? Sonko: I am your long lost son.” – Kevin Omondi
- “Sonko: Mr President, I have some information that can help you fight corruption. Ruto: Really? What is it? Sonko: I have the names and bank accounts of all the cartels who stole money from the county government.” – Esther Njeri
- “Sonko: Sir, I have a request to make. Ruto: Go ahead. Sonko: Can you please appoint me as your deputy president? Ruto: Sonko, are you serious?” – James Kimani
The photo, which was taken at a funeral service in Kiambu County on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, showed Sonko and Ruto in a friendly mood, despite their political differences. Sonko, who was impeached as governor in December 2020², had previously accused Ruto of being behind his ouster. Ruto, on the other hand, had distanced himself from Sonko’s woes and said he had no influence over the impeachment process.
