The government has lamented of unending political threats on its officers, despite it being in between elections, a time when things should be calm.

Yet, the tranquility has been shattered, with employees finding themselves at the center of a storm, besieged by threats that won’t subside.

Secretaries of state, those stalwart defenders of democracy, and experts who have dedicated their lives to upholding the integrity of the electoral process, have raised their voices in alarm.

They are pointing to a disconcerting source: former President Donald Trump and his staunch allies.

Their relentless and baseless claims that the 2020 election was been stolen and the relentless spread of conspiracy theories have sown seeds of discontent, with government officers carrying the burden and having to deal with Trump supporters’ threats.

John Keller, the Election Threats Task Force second in command, confirmed the threats in an interview with The Associated Press, .

He said that with more than a dozen people having been charged nationally over such threats, the department hopes the prosecutions will now deter others from threatening election workers.

“This isn’t going to be taken lightly. It’s not going to be trivialised. Federal judges, the courts are taking misconduct seriously and the punishments are going to be commensurate with the seriousness of the conduct,” he said on Friday, September 1.

On Thursday, August 31, two more people leader guilty to threatening election workers in Georgia and Arizona stated in separate cases.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said that the plan is to ensure that election workers do their work free from intimidation and manipulation.

“A functioning democracy requires that the public servants who administer our elections are able to do their jobs without fearing for their lives,” he said.

But Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, a Democrat who has pushed back against conspiracy theories surrounding the 2020 elections, has predicted that things can only worsen, even as she hopes that they don’t.

“I’m really hopeful the charges will send a strong message, and we won’t find ourselves in the same position after the next election,” she said.
