Working as former President Mwai Kibaki as an Aide-de-camp propelled Colonel ( Rtd) Geoffrey King’áng’i very close to power.
Perhaps, having interacted with powerful politicians in the Kibaki adminstration pushed the former Kenya Army man to make a huge plunge into the murky world of politics.
Straight from State House and military barracks, Colonel ( Rtd ) King’áng’i joined the battle for the Mbeere South MP seat. His position at the seat of power had been taken by the now Kenya Army Commander, Lieutenant General Peter Mbogo Njiru.
And just like that, the man who had loyally served as Kibaki’s aide was now a politician. Though he lost in 2013 to the incumbent Mutava Musyimi, he did bounce back in style four years later when he whitewashed the former bishop to be elected as an MP.
However, for the man who was once tipped to dominate the region’s politics, the former soldier made a miscalculated move that cost him his seat five years later.
In 2022, King’áng’i was among the Mount Kenya region politicians who opted to defy the then President Uhuru Kenyatta and back his deputy William Ruto in the State House race.
Though Dr Ruto did win the presidency, it was a catastrophe for the former ADC as he found the going tough in his quest for a second straight term in office. He lost during the UDA party nominations. He would later announce his decision to retire from politics. He nonetheless remained very close to Ruto.
But almost one year later, the former soldier is nowhere to be seen. He has kept a very low profile, rarely appearing in public.
To make things worse, he is among the many Ruto loyalists who are still languishing in the cold having failed to land top government jobs.
