After a 2 hours delay due to adverse weather conditions, the 2023 World Athletics Championships finally kicked off in Budapest, Hungary with the men’s 20km walk race where Kenya was represented by the African champion Samuel Gathimba.He went on to finish the race at the ninth position after clocking a time of 1:18.34.
The race was won by Spain’s Alvaro Martin who clocked 1:17.32 followed by Perseus Karlström from Sweden, Caio Bonfim from Brazil, Evan Dunfee from Canada and Christopher Linke who rapped up the top 5 positions with times of 1:17.39, 1:17.47, 1:18.03 and 1:18.12 respectively.Despite finishing 9th, Gathimba’s time was fast enough to help him qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
