Two cabinet secretaries who didn’t sign performance contracts due to tardiness have been told by President William Ruto to provide a written justification.

The Interior CS Kithure Kindiki and his Trade Counterpart Moses Kuria were barred out of State House, which incensed the President, who demanded an explanation.

“I don’t understand why one can miss such an important event which is surrounding their work. For you to miss such an event, you have dismissed yourself,” Ruto said.

The Head of State further instructed the locked-out CSs to personally write him a letter excusing their tardiness.

“I will be looking forward to a personally written explanation on why you were late and don’t use traffic as an excuse,” Ruto added.

The ceremony was scheduled to start at 8 a.m., according to an official schedule distributed by State House Press Secretary Emmanuel Talam.

This meant that all of the CSs and their Principal Secretaries needed to be seated prior to the event’s scheduled start time.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua admonished CSs and PSs during the ceremony against arriving late, saying there could not be any excuse for it.

“I saw some were late, and I looked at the President in the eye and realised that there would be trouble for them,” Gachagua said.

“You can’t arrive at an event when the President is already seated. Why would you come late? How do you explain that? Who did you go to see and yet today was the most important day for you to sign contracts?”
