Former Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria currently serves as the leader of the Usawa party, however party members have declared that Wa Iria is no longer in that role.
The party has formally quit Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja alliance, according to the members who convened the party’s general meeting in Nairobi. They also stated that the party will no longer participate in any protests or other events organized by the Azimio leadership.
They issued a notice stating Wa Iria is no longer the party’s head and will no longer speak on its behalf. The participants declared their willingness to cooperate with President William Ruto and Rigathi Gachagua, who serve as his deputy.
Party members from throughout the nation made the announcement that they would soon make an official announcement about the direction the Usawa party will pursue in politics.
“We want to make it clear that we are not a part of the ongoing violent protests that have resulted in fatalities and economic sabotage. We separate ourselves from these demonstrations and the participants, such as Francis Mwangi Wa Iria. We want to make it absolutely clear that Mwangi Wa Iria is acting on his own behalf wherever he may be and in no way speaking for Usawa Kwa Wote Party, said one of the group’s members.
The participants asserted that Mwangi is by himself in Azimio and that all of the demands he is making of the government are his own.
“We want to tell Kenyans that we as Usawa members, we are soon going to state our next move” added another member
The embattled Usawa party leader Mwangi Wa Iria has not been in public since he attended a press briefing alongside Azimio leaders on Tuesday, July 18.
His aide Alvan Kinyua said where he’s holed up is unclear, but police officers had been stationed outside his home for three days.
