Former Nairobi governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko is among the richest politician in Kenya. He is never afraid to show off his wealth. Just recently, Sonko posted a video online showing thousands of money stacked in gold coated suitcases.
The video elicited mixed reactions from netizens who were curious to know the source of his wealth. Sonko bragged that he had over thirty million in his house just for fueling his cars and getting drinks.
Despite all the wealth and success, what people don’ t know is that Sonko wasn’ t always this rich. He had to struggle from the bottom to reach where he is today.
His throwback photos are a proof of the ‘ husler’ life he used to live. According to Sonko his wealth was attributed to a five acres piece of land that he sold for ksh 5 Million.
He relocated to Nairobi in 1994. He decided to invest in matatu business and bought 18 vehicles that used to carry people from Kibera route. His business slowly started rising and he added more matatus.
He decided to also invest in other businesses. He opened a chemist. However, the chemist has always been an issue of concern as people believe that he used it to sell illegal drugs which he brought from Mombasa.
He however, refuted the claims stating that he has never sold any illegal drugs. He further stated in a past interview that his chemist only sold legal drugs and has never sold any hard drugs.
” The only drugs I have ever sold are Panadol and Eno when I used to own a small chemist. The other rumours are pure lies. ” He stated.
Sonko has also been involved in other scandals linking him to money laundering and corruption. He has been in court several times due to the alleged charges which he has denied
