The government is coming up with new regulations that will see politician’s, business enterprises, matatus and media station’s pay some amount for the music they play on their stations.This is a move that will see the musicians benefit from their trade. The charges are different for the various categories.
At the lowest cadre are the kinyozi and the salon’s which will part with 7, 000shs per year as licence fee so as to play various music on their beauty spot’s. Cities night club’s will pay shs 80, 000 just to play the music while DJs will pay 30, 000 per event or 20, 000 per year. So a DJ and a club will pay a combined 100, 000 shs.
A wagon train will be required to pay shs 20, 000 while a 34 seater will pay shs 12, 000, 8, 000 for a minibus while matatus pay 4, 000 per year. Radio stations will pay 500, 000 shs while Tv station’s pay 300, 000 shs. Politicians to pay from 12, 500 shs for MCA’s going upwards to shs 600, 000 for a party. Presidential candidates will part with shs 400, 000. The proposals are via the Music Copyright Societies of Kenya.
