A student at Khasoko Boys High School in Bumula, Bungoma County, was reported to have lost his life while receiving treatment at the Bungoma County Referral Hospital.
Following the student’s death, the administration decided to close the school, with only the Form Four class remaining to continue their studies.
While confirming the incidence, the school principal, Daniel Masombo, claimed that a postmortem had revealed that the student had died after suffering from acute malaria.
However, Bungoma County Health CEC Dr Andrew Wamalwa indicated that further postmortem investigations revealed that the student died after suffering a perforation in the stomach leading to peritonitis.
In the medical field, peritonitis is caused by bacteria or fungi in which the thin layer of tissues inside the abdomen becomes inflamed.
A team of doctors has since been sent to the institution to collect samples of food and water for analysis.
The school administration had been forced to shut down the school following tension across schools in the neighbouring Kakamega county that had been shut down after incidents of student deaths and hospitalization.
