President William Ruto has stood the grounds that his government will not borrow to cater for civil servants’ salaries amid boycott threats in bid to push the Treasury to release the state officials’ salaries.
Thousands of public service employees are yet to get their March salaries and some county government workers have reportedly not received their salaries for up to three months now.
“We are not going to borrow money to pay salaries,” the President maintained on Tuesday. Governors have protested at failure by the Treasury to disburse money to the counties for the fourth consecutive month since December.
By end of March, counties said they were owed Ksh122.1 billion, with the County bosses blaming the disbursement delays for their failure to pay county workers their salaries.
The counties are owed Ksh29.6 billion for December, Ksh31.45 billion for January and February each, and Ksh29.6 billion for March. Dr. Ruto’s remarks come at a time the civil servants have reportedly had their dues delayed for the first time in history.
Following the delays, medical experts gave the government one week to have the issue addressed or down their tools.
