Several days after reporting threats from unknown assailants, the body of a land crusader and Human Rights activist based in Mombasa was discovered in his home. The victim, an outspoken opponent of wealthy landowners, is said to have lived in constant fear of assailants sent in revenge by his opponents.
Wilson Kazungu, the victim identified by police, was reported dead by family members who had been searching for him all day and into the night before his body was found, as reported by the Citizen TV Digital news media platform. According to those with knowledge of the situation, the activist’s phone went unanswered the day after he revealed that influential people he knew were threatening him.
Wilson has been at the forefront of the fight to return thousands of acres of land to landless residents of Kilifi, a contentious issue that has stoked strong emotions. It is said that he informed authorities about the powerful billionaire land barons responsible for the threats.
