Jeremiah Kioni, secretary general of the Jubilee Party, has urged party members and supporters of former president Uhuru Kenyatta to take part in upcoming anti-government demonstrations.

At a speech on March 22, 2023, Kioni insisted that Kenyans cannot be denied the freedom to peaceful protest.

“If we keep granting police officers authority through the back door to the point where they are able to prevent you from expressing your opinions when you want to, we will have accomplished what our 2010 Constitution set out to do. Yesterday, a few lawmakers threatened to break into Uhuru Kenyatta’s properties during a press conference. This has gone too far, I want to express as secretary general of Jubilee. The police ought to put a stop to this. Uhuru must no longer be used as a convenient scapegoat for all of the issues this nation is currently experiencing. Also, we’re urging Uhuru’s followers to publicly express their support “added Kioni.

Jubilee Party is a part of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition, which has committed to continue holding anti-government demonstrations every Monday and Thursday until the government accedes to their demands.

“The letter for our demonstrations on Monday and Thursday has been served. We are not doing this because protests in this nation require a police officer’s permission. Every Kenyan is entitled to it by virtue of the constitution, he said.

Due to “public demand,” Azimio leader Raila Odinga declared on Tuesday that there would be twice-weekly anti-government demonstrations.

Beginning the following week, we will stage protests every Thursday and Monday in response to popular demand, added Raila.

The opposition has called for peaceful protests for a number of reasons, including the high cost of living, election injustice, nepotism in state positions, the firing of civil servants, and defense of democracy, according to the former prime minister.
