The Kenyan government, headed by President William Ruto, earlier today shared some encouraging news with all Kenyan citizens regarding the high cost of living that Kenyans currently face.
The government of Kenya launched a large project that will result in the sale of five items at a lower price in local stores, as well as the benefit of a program that will allow 500,000 stores throughout Kenya to sell these subsidised goods.
Moses Kuria, Cabinet Secretary for Trade, claims that a government scheme that would see 500,000 stores from low-income areas of Kenya sell the five products for which the government is proposing to subsidize their costs, so cutting their prices for a year, would be beneficial to them.
In comparison to other stores in the area, the five items would therefore be offered for sale at a lower price at the chosen stores. The government’s action was made feasible because to partnerships it had established with national and international financial institutions that extended financing to the government and the Kenya National Trade Corporation. 500,000 shops will be chosen by the government as part of the new scheme using yet-to-be-released criteria. To these stores, the government will provide duty-free rice, cooking oil, sugar, beans, and wheat, which will be offered for sale at a reduced price for a year.
The government’s action is applauded, especially in light of the high cost of living that Kenyans have experienced since the COVID era. The five items will be sold at a discounted price that would see their cost cut by 30% because they were duty-free purchases made by Kenyans and entered the country at a reduced cost.
