Renowned vernacular singer and songwriter Samidoh Muchoki has recounted on some of the struggles that he went through on his journey to stardom. The singer took his fans through a narration of how he came to Nairobi and the breakthrough of his career in music. Among the parts of the story that attracted the attention of many was when he got mugged while on the streets of Nairobi.
The singer recalled how two people who had offered to buy him mugged him. According to the narration, the singer had just finished one of his first performances at the National Theatre in Nairobi. After the show, two people walked up to him and offered to buy him lunch as a gesture of appreciation for his good performance.
Samidoh trusted them and followed them to the place where they were supposed to buy him lunch. Little did he know that he was being tricked so that he could be robbed. When they reached the destination, he was sandwiched by the two men and then robbed. His efforts to call for help bore no fruit as the two claimed that he was their brother who was mentally ill.
“Nikawafuata, nyang’au zikanipeleka jifaanjii(Jeevanje)wakanisongea wakaanza kunipora wakiniita bro. Nikapiga nduru, watu kukuja mmoja wao akasema ati mimi ni bro yao na sikuwangi na kichwa mzuri ati nilikuwa nimeletwa hosi na nilikuwa nakataa kwenda mathare,” a part of the narration read.
“Nikajaribu kuwaambia mimi si mwenda wazimu na nilikiwa nimekuja kuperform national theater, watu kuniangalia vile nilikuwa nimevalia suti ya kaunda with mixed colours wakacheka, wengine ata wanasema,”gûtirî mûgûrûki ûgaga ni mûgûrûki”(hakuna wazimu hukubali yeye ni wazimu) na wakasaidia wale majamaa kunifunga na kamba,” he added.
