If only she knew that Sh200 would land her in jail, she would have followed her husband’s advice and bought before to prepare soup.
Mildred Shimambo, 29,was married to Humphrey Simiyu at 19 and they lived in Webuye town.
On February 6, 2011, her late husband left Sh200 for beef.
“Instead I used the money to buy cooking oil and the remaining for greens. He was always drunk and soup would help him. I never knew disobeying him would be the end of him,” she says.
The man came home and was upset over the lack of meat.
A fight broke out and the woman pushed the man, who fell and hit his head. “I carried him to bed after he said I had hurt him.”
At around 5am, the woman noticed the man was dead.
Shimambo was arrested after police tracked her phone. She was arraigned in court where she was charged and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
She was taken to Kisumu prisons where she served her sentence. She took Theology classes while in prison, which is why she was against her father’s move to find a black goat to cleanse her.
Her father said the ritual was necessary to ensure a curse does not befall the community upon Shimambo’s release. She left prison on November 13, 2021.
She stayed with a friend for a month until when her family sought her forgiveness for shunning her and asked her to come back home. She was welcomed and had a chance to reunite with her daughter.
Shimambo says she regrets her action and spends time speaking to youth to stay away from crime.
She has since released a gospel song and continues with her life in spreading the gospel.
