The Kenyan school calendar suffered massive blows from COVID -19, and while it was recoverying, general elections disrupts it again. These turn of events are worrying to parents, teachers, students and stakeholders. Regarding the elections, the ministry of education closed schools temprarily as most are used as polling centers.
The ministry of education was optimistic that re-opening would follow soon after elections were over. Therefore, it scheduled the re-opening to 11th August 2022. However, that never happened due to the delay in announcing the presidential election results. CS George Magoha then issued a statement confirming that schools were scheduled to re-open on 15th August 2022. On the contrary, that did not happen because IEBC was to announce the results on the same date.
Now, Primary and Secondary schools are scheduled to re-open on 18th August 2022, and Magoha has assured parents, teachers and students that they won’t loose more time in the event that there is a repeat election. He says that schools won’t close because he is urging the IEBC to use higher learnininstitutions as election centers to give young learns ample time to study.
“If the tallying of votes is supposed to, let’s say, take place at a secondary school, we want to urge the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to relocate polling and tallying centers to institutions of higher learning. This will avert the loss of more time in the academic calendar.” Said CS Magoha when commissioning CBC classrooms in Makadara and Embakasi.
