Mighty King Kong was the stage name used by Kenyan reggae musician Paul Otieno Imbaya. In the Siaya District’s Ugenya, he was born.
He had a severe case of polio as a child, leaving him completely wheelchair-bound. After his father passed away, he left Ambira Primary School at the end of Standard Six. He relocated to Kisumu, where he started living on the streets and begging.
He relocated to Nairobi in 1993. He was allowed to perform at Nairobi clubs once a week thanks to DJ Stone, a local deejay he had met in Kisumu.
At the age of 34, he passed away from poisoning on Christmas Day, 2007. (as attributed in the local newspapers). He was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, where he passed away while receiving medical attention.
Above all, he was a fervent admirer of Raila Odinga’s ODM political organisation, which had pledged to nominate him for election to the next parliament on his behalf. In his final days, he was spotted sporting an orange outfit as a strong declaration of loyalty to the party.
