Ray C was among few female artistes who had taken the East African music by storm. She was the most bookable and most sought after female singer at the time.

She was born in 15th may in Tanzania, Ray c is popularly known for bongo music R&B and taarab.

Before venturing into music, she worked as a presenter for the Dar el salaam based Clouds FM radio station. She released her debut album “Mapenzi Yangu” in 2003.

Ray C however lost her magic after she was introduced to drugs by her friends. Her battle with drugs went viral and at one point she added almost five times her weight hence losing her sexy slender figure.

Around 2011, the singer was caught in a self-confessed drug addiction that nearly cost her her life. Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete responded to her family’s cries and helped rehabilitate the Moto Moto singer who at the time had become emaciated.

However, there was a hitch in the process. It was reported that she was rescued by police after she tried to commit suicide on the 16th of that respective month.

In 2017, the Bongo Flava star was sent back to a rehabilitation centre in Dar es Salaam, after attempting suicide.

This was after retired President Jakaya Kikwete and several well wishers sent the singer to rehab in 2012.In 2016, Kikwete urged Ray C to stop taking drugs while on methadone treatment as it would result in her breaking down.

After her recovery, the disgraced singer gained a lot of weight and embarked on a weight-loss journey, in addition to reviving her music career to regain her fans confidence.

The journey to recovery and staying clean for the Uko Wapi hitmaker has not been easy, and with time, she came to discover that self-love and acceptance is the start to staying healthy.
