The High Court in Nairobi has dismissed an application by a woman who hired hitmen to murder her husband of 21 years in Gituamba village, Ruai.
Winrose Njeri Kamau, a mother of three, had asked the court to reduce her life sentence to a definite number of years. However, High Court Judge A. M. Muteti threw out her application, stating that she had “come to the end of the road” until Parliament defines life imprisonment in law.
The dark story dates back to April 27, 2011, when Njeri sneaked two hired assailants into her matrimonial home over a land dispute. She instructed them to hide under the master bedroom bed until her husband, Muriuki Gicheru Njari, returned home.
Later that night, the hitmen crawled out and attacked Muriuki with pangas, leaving him dead in a pool of blood.
Njeri tried to cover up the crime by claiming local thugs had broken in. But when a nephew walked into the house the next morning, he found a gruesome scene with blood everywhere and clear signs of a staged break-in.
Trapped by neighbors and police, Njeri confessed on the spot. She was later convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
