My love for acting grew in high school, Awinja told Churchill
On the My journey series on the Churchill show on NTV, actress Jacky Vyke told Churchill that she credits her success to her mother and to the late Papa who believed in her talent.
‘I tapped into my art in high school. Hii lover iligrow nikiwa high school. At the time, I lost my dad and wondered if I would continue with school because he was the provider. But my mum, huyu mama, made sure all of us continued. Mum wanted me to be an air hostess but my heart as in theatre. So when I was going for rehearsals at KNT, my mum thought I was going to college the whole time, but in time I had to tell her the truth. I was earning 500 at the theatre a day and when I told her, she was very impressed and told me if this is what you want to do, go ahead’
Awinja also told Churchill that she is grateful for her mum for the struggles she went through to make sure all her children went to school. She also told Churchill about the impact the late Charles Bukeko had on her career and how her launched her into the show all Kenyans love – Papa Shirandula.
‘Papa was in the audition panel, and called me to tell me there was a role for a Luhyia girl for me. He asked me if I can pull off a luhyia accent and told him No. He tried convincing me but I told him there was someone else I knew who could do it. He refused as he wanted me to act that role. I owe my success to Papa, I worked with a legend. Maze he was so professional and time conscious. And he was very caring and even outside the set he was our dad. I always say I have lost two dads’
