Ruth Odinga Breaks Silence on False Death Reports About Brother Oburu Oginga

Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has reassured Kenyans that her brother, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader and Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga, is alive and recovering under medical guidance following false social media reports claiming that he had died.

In a statement released on October 6, 2026, Ruth addressed growing concerns about the 83-year-old senator’s health, dismissing the circulating reports as misinformation that had caused unnecessary anxiety among family members, supporters and the wider public.

She confirmed that the family was aware of the rumours and maintained that Oburu was in good health and making progress in his recovery. She also expressed gratitude to Kenyans who had sent messages of encouragement and continued to pray for the senator’s well-being.

Ruth urged journalists, social media users and members of the public to exercise caution when sharing information concerning people’s health, particularly when such claims have not been verified. She encouraged Kenyans to rely on official statements from the family and ODM leadership for accurate updates.

The false reports also drew a strong reaction from Oburu’s son, Jaoko Oburu, who condemned the claims as irresponsible, calling for greater sensitivity when discussing his father’s condition.

Earlier, ODM National Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga reported visiting the senator and described him as being in good spirits and steadily recovering.

Oburu’s office also reassured the public that he was following his doctors’ advice to rest and avoid strenuous activities. Although temporarily reducing his workload, the senator has continued engaging with party and national affairs.

ODM Communications Director Philip Etale had previously clarified that Oburu’s visit to The Nairobi Hospital was for a routine medical check-up, dismissing speculation that he had been rushed to hospital.

Since the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in October 2025, Oburu has assumed leadership of ODM. His reduced public appearances have attracted attention as the party prepares for the 2027 General Election.

The family has appealed to Kenyans to continue praying for the senator while respecting his privacy and allowing him sufficient time to recover.
