Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has explained why Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna left the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), saying the party was no longer the political home they needed.

Speaking about the opposition’s political direction, Natembeya said Sifuna’s departure should be viewed within the broader changes taking place in the country’s opposition politics. He suggested that the emerging political formation offers leaders and supporters a platform they can collectively identify with.

Natembeya used the imagery of a home to describe the new political arrangement, saying the opposition now has a space where its members can work together without feeling like outsiders.

He maintained that the new formation should accommodate leaders from different political backgrounds while providing room for them to pursue a common political agenda.

Sifuna, who has been a prominent figure in ODM, has increasingly been associated with efforts to strengthen a broader opposition movement ahead of the 2027 General Election. His political position has attracted attention as opposition leaders consider possible alliances and strategies for the next election.

Natembeya’s remarks are likely to add to the debate over the future of opposition politics and the role Sifuna could play in the emerging alliance.

The governor has previously positioned himself as one of the leaders advocating for greater cooperation among opposition figures. He has argued that political parties and leaders must find common ground if they hope to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration effectively.

The formation of a united opposition remains a major issue ahead of 2027, with several leaders weighing their options and assessing potential alliances.

Natembeya’s comments suggest that he views the new political arrangement as a platform capable of bringing together leaders who previously operated under different parties.

With political realignments expected to intensify in the coming months, Sifuna’s role in the emerging opposition coalition could become increasingly significant.

The remarks also highlight the growing competition among political formations seeking to attract influential leaders and build nationwide support ahead of the 2027 elections.
